US police kill mentally-troubled double amputee

A US law enforcement agent has shot and killed a mentally-troubled double amputee, who had reportedly started to threaten people with a pen at a personal care residence in Houston.

The shooting took place on Saturday after the residence called in the police, saying the victim, Brian Claunch, a male in his 40s, had reportedly started to act restless.

Claunch was described as a wheelchair-bound schizophrenic, who had lost an arm and a leg in a train accident.

"He was attempting to stab them," police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said, referring to two officers, who had reached the place, “with what is now found to be a pen.”

The shooter, named Matt Marin, "in fear of the safety of his partner and the safety of himself, discharges his duty weapon, striking the suspect," Silva said.
